Theory - Virtual: Sun, Oct 18, 8 to 9PM
Practical - In-Person: Sat, Oct 24, 7:30 to 9:30AM
Mantrailing is having dogs to find "missing" humans, taking scent from an article left behind by the humans. The Introduction to Mantrailing course gives you a taste of this activity and requires the following:
1. A one-hour theory session conducted virtually over Microsoft Teams. This will also reduce time needed outdoors when we meet up.
2. Homework: Teach your dog target sniffing. I will explain how during the theory session. No homework done, no trailing.
3. A two-hour practical session: This comprises two turns per dog, and each turn is 2 to 3 trails. Each dog should preferably bring 2 humans along. All humans will also be trail layers for other dogs so that each dog gets to search for "strangers". The practical session is also very weather dependent - flexibility is needed.
As with any skill, it takes practice to become good at it. Once you've completed the introduction course, you can join progression trails with other teams.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate, which will allow you to join progression sessions with any other Mantrailing Global Instructors around the world.
You do not need to have taken any scent work classes to join this course.
I cannot wait for you to be impressed by your dog :-)
TERMS & CONDITIONS
Anything scent work is our favorite sport, and we are excited for the opportunity to share mantrailing with you. But first, here are some important information, and terms and conditions to ensure we all have fun in a safe, responsible way.
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS
Safety First. Always. No Compromise.
• All dogs must be leashed on the way to class and while in class. Please feel free to bring a crate or place mat if that helps keep your dog safer.
• Avoid dog-dog interaction. The outcomes of any dog interaction are the sole responsibility of owners.
• Dogs will work one-by-one. There will be enough space for dogs to have some distance apart.
• All dogs must be up to date on vaccinations.
• If your dog is very selective – especially those selective about humans – please form a group with two other dogs that are friends and request for a private session.
Every dog – especially the nervous ones – needs a safe place to build confidence through positive experiences so let’s be supportive of each other.
By attending the course, you accept the risk that comes with participating in an activity with dogs, and you agree to indemnify and hold harmless K9 Scent Work Pte Ltd and instructor Linda Lim for all personal injury and damage to yourself, your dog and property while traveling to/from the class, and in class.
CLASS INSTRUCTIONS
• Please do not use prong, choke or e-collar in class. While I respect everyone’s views on tools, SG K9 Scent Work does not allow these tools in class. Dogs lead in this game - they practice agency and I need them to feel as free as possible in their movements.
• All dogs must mantrail in a no-pull harness and 10m long leash. I have mantrailing harnesses in size XS to XL that you can use in class. I also have long leash you can borrow.
• It is your responsibility to know what treat/toy your dog values. Please bring only high value treats or toy to the practical session.
• Let me know if your dog has resource-guarding issue.
If you have a confident dog, your dog will pull on the leash. This is what we want. If you are not ok with leash pulling, mantrailing isn't for you.
FEMALE IN SEASON & SICK DOGS
• Please do not bring your female dog to class if they are in heat and inform SG K9 Scent Work immediately.
• Please do not bring your dog to class if they have a contagious illness, e.g. kennel cough, fleas etc, or has been in contact with another dog with a contagious illness.
PHOTOS & VIDEOS
• SG K9 Scent Work will video record the practical session and share with you a compilation of your dog’s individual turns. Reviewing videos is incredibly helpful for noting behaviors you might have missed in the moment of the run. You are free to edit and post snippets of the class - just not in entirety.
• I would appreciate the use of your photos and videos on SG K9 Scent Work’s social media accounts (Instagram and Facebook) and website as it helps others to understand what scent work is about. If you do not wish for me to use your videos or photos, please let me know before the class.
• Please feel free to take videos of your own dog working, but not of other dogs without permission from their owners.
• By attending the class, you agree not to video/audio record the class and post the entire proceedings, including instructions from the trainer, in public.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
• All materials provided in class are the sole copyright and ownership of K9 Scent Work Pte Ltd and Linda Lim.
• Please do not replicate or share the materials and training techniques for any purpose.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS
• Fees must be paid in full for your place in class to be secured.
• Let me know as soon as possible if you must cancel – if I can fill your place, a full refund will be given. If I am unable to fill your place, then no refund will be given.
• No refunds will be made if cancellation is received 7 days before the class. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis, especially for dogs in heat or have fallen ill.
OUR VALUES
SG K9 Scent Work's positive, fear-free, and dog-centric focus aims to create a supportive and enjoyable experience for each dog and human. There is more than one way to learn any skill and we do not claim to be the only way nor the best way.
We value humility and respect – to embrace the fact that we are being led by our dogs in scent work because their noses are so much superior to ours, and our role is to partner and support them. We believe that we can learn a lot from our dogs when we observe and understand their behavior. And we absolutely think we learn a lot from each other’s unique perspective and insights.
Because dogs are dogs and not robots, results may vary. But you will come to class with the best dog in the world and you will leave class with the best dog in the world. Our dogs did not register for the class, nor did they pay the fees. They only know they are spending time with you, eating high value treats or playing with their favorite toy and humans, and doing what they do best – sniff.
