SCENT WORK FOUNDATION WORKSHOP (90mins)

Learn the scent work game!  This workshop has three objectives: 1. teach the scent game using boxes; 2. show humans how to use boxes to create different scent puzzles with an understanding of basic scent theory; and 3. create a greater awareness of what scenting behaviors dogs display. The workshop is great for learning the foundations of detection scent work using high value treats. These are one-off 90-minute sessions and suitable for beginners - and teams take a "test" to earn their Treat Hunter Award at the end of the session.

 

SCENT WORK COURSE | INTRODUCTION TO BIRCH
(5 sessions if you have completed the foundation workshop; 6 sessions if not | 60~75 mins/session)

This course is for teams who want to learn scent work as a sport. The first session is similar to the scent work foundation workshop - which is why the course is 5-sessions for teams who have completed the workshop and 6 sessions for those who have not. In this course, teams are introduced to Birch as their first target odor, exposed to different kind of scent puzzles, work together to solve these puzzles, and learn how to communicate with each other. 

 

INTRODUCTION TO VEHICLE SEARCH (1 x 60min)

Pre-requisite: Scent Work Foundation OR Scent Work Course

The car is like a big complicated box. In this one-off workshop, teams are taught how to orient a dog to the vehicle and get a taste of vehicle searches. Dogs' nails must be groomed and rounded before class.

PROGRESSION SCENT WORK COURSE (Regular classes)

Pre-requisite: Scent Work Course

With good foundations built, teams can continue regular practices to keep challenging themselves and growing in the sport of scent work. Each class, we do at least 5 scent puzzles and debrief together to keep refining skills in a few areas - 1. dog handling; 2. behavior reading; 3. human-dog teamwork. 

INTRODUCTION TO MANTRAILING WORKSHOP

Mantrailing is a sport where dogs find "missing" people for fun by following their unique scent trail. Completing the introduction workshop allows you to participate in progression mantrailing conducted by any other Mantrailing Global Instructor around the world. The introduction workshop comprises the following:

1 hour online: We cover what mantrailing is, theoretical aspects of the sport, and also discuss logistics for the practical session.
Homework: Teams then teach their dog a new target sniffing cue ahead of the practical session:
2 hour practical in-person: Teams then meet in-person for their practical segment where everything comes together for their first mantrailing experience.

Scent work is excellent for dogs’ mental health! It allows them to practice agency, build confidence and fulfils them mentally.  I would love to help you add scent work to your shelter’s enrichment program.

We value humility and respect – to embrace the fact that we are being led by our dogs in scent work because their noses are so much superior to ours, and our role is to partner and support them.  We believe that we can learn a lot from our dogs when we observe and understand their behavior. And we absolutely think we learn a lot from each other’s unique perspective and insights.

Because dogs are dogs and not robots, results may vary. But you will come to class with the best dog in the world and you will leave class with the best dog in the world. Our dogs did not register for the class, nor did they pay the fees. They only know they are spending time with you, eating high value treats and doing what they do best – sniff.
